Short film research: Interpretation by Lin Oeding (2008)

 Hello Bloggers! I watched the short film, Interpretation by Lin Oeding, in addition to some others, and I realized that the Thriller Genre has some specifics that are the same in almost every Thriller film. Here are some examples: 


Common Sounds

  1. Tension-Building Music: The film uses minimal, eerie music to create a foreboding atmosphere.
  2. Ambient Noise: Sounds like footsteps, distant conversations, and environmental city noise add realism and immersion.
  3. Silence: Strategic use of silence or minimal sound heightens tension and focuses on the actors’ actions and emotions.

Common Mise-En-Scene (CLAMPS) 

  • Costume: The characters wear casual but neutral clothing, fitting into the urban environment while allowing subtle hints about personality or status.
  • Lighting: Low-key lighting with a focus on natural and practical light sources. Shadows and dimly lit areas enhance the sense of danger.
  • Actors: The characters portray psychological depth and unpredictability, keeping the audience guessing about intentions.
  • Makeup: Minimalist but realistic; any injuries or blood are presented in a naturalistic manner.
  • Props: Key items like weapons are central to the narrative and reveal shifts in power dynamics.
  • Setting: An urban alleyway serves as a confined, isolating location that adds tension and a sense of claustrophobia.

Common Editing 

  1. Quick Cuts: Used during moments of violence or action to emphasize urgency and chaos.
  2. Cross-Cutting: Alternates between perspectives during the conversation, building tension as the dialogue unfolds.
  3. Close-Ups: Focuses on facial expressions and subtle gestures to reveal emotions and clues.
Example Films
  1. Collateral (2004) – Shares urban, confined settings and tension-filled conversations.
  2. Drive (2011) – Features minimal dialogue, intense bursts of violence, and atmospheric tension.
  3. The Gift (2015) – Explores psychological manipulation and unexpected twists.

Elements of Thriller Genre that I like

  • Atmosphere: The confined urban setting and shadowy lighting enhance the mood of danger and suspense.
  • Unpredictability: Characters' intentions and the outcome remain unclear, keeping the audience engaged.
  • Minimalism: Focus on essential elements, such as dialogue and action, avoids unnecessary distractions.

Elements of Thriller Genre That Do Not Appeal

  • Ambiguity: While effective for some, the lack of clear resolution might leave viewers wanting more closure.
  • Predictable Tropes: If not handled carefully, elements like sudden violence in a tense conversation can feel formulaic.
  • Short Length: As a short film, Interpretation may leave some viewers wishing for a deeper exploration of its characters or themes.

   Hey bloggers and welcome back to the continuation of my opening sequence. Today I will be tinkering throughout my sequence attempting to make it as improved as possible. Very similarly to what I did with my last blog. Considering how much I tweaked during the film review and the critique I used. It was relatively hard for me to see what was still wrong with the opening sequence. This meant I had to thoroughly watch and rewatch our current sequence in order to find thing I could improve upon. This took me quite a bit of minutes before finding pieces of the opening sequence that were not up to standard. The first thing I changed was the positioning of the titles as I wasn't very fond of where they previously were. At times the titles blocked out some important backgrounds or scenes due to their position and size. Reserach: Action Genre

   I'm researching genres to see if it's possible to spin our pitch in a creative way. The genre I am researching at the moment is the action genre. The action movies I researched tend to have these angles and movements of the camera: High and Low angle Birds Eye Views Tracking Shots Side Views Establishing Shots Common Mis-En-Scene used in action films: Occasional comedy Large and intricate movie sets (they get destroyed) Abundance of creative prop usage to create fake glass and prop weapons Intense usage of costumes to differentiate background characters from main characters Use of lighting to create tense feelings in audience (flashing lights, dim lights) Common Editing used in action films: Jump Cuts Cuts Fade Aways Cross Cuts Dissolve Inserts Common Sounds used in action films: Dialogue Intense music leaving audience on edge of their seats Sound Bridges Ambient Sounds to immerse audience Films I watched in this genre: Bullet Train The Gray Man Ghosted The John Wick Series...

Our Pitch

  These are our pitches we came up with for our opening sequence  Pitch A: A group of students plan out an innocent camping trip and begin to find out that there is something out there, something watching them the entire time. Pitch B: A family hires a personal chef, the chef sneakily steals items from their house covering his tracks no matter the cost. Pitch A seemed a little cliche to us at first but it was a very feasible idea that could still be loads of fun and really well produced. We found that it would be simpler to use effective music in a thriller as there are loads more films and media work using suspenseful music. We also had a slight plan as to where we would film the sequence, Oleta State Park. We also had the camping equipment necessary for the props and costumes allowing our budgets to be put towards other things.
